It was a late Friday night and my friends and I were told about something known as “Mike Check.” “Mike Check” was directed towards bringing out artistically gifted people. I honestly did not know what to expect when I arrived. At one point I imagined there would be rap battles among whoever wanted to sign up from the audience. Then I started to look forward to that even though I had no idea if that was going to be a part of “Mike Check” or not.
The time was getting closer and closer to begin the show. One of my friends, we call him Jo Jo, was seriously debating on whether or not he was going to sign up. He has always been musically talented. Whenever I am with him and we are walking around UK’s campus girls I, and sometimes he, do not even know come up to him and ask him to sing. Jo Jo finally decided to put his name on the list. His performance was going to be him singing a song, while he was playing the piano. For as long as I have no him (at least 10 years) I had never seen him perform before. This was a treat for me.
“Mike Check” began. There was one rule they had to follow: each performer must say the phrase “Mike check” before they start their performance. Then the audience shouts “One two!” in response. The first guy stepped up to the mike and instantly started to sing without saying the phrase “mike check.” The crew running the show on the side of the stage stopped him and told him he had to say it. The guy forgot again! He then stepped aside and started laughing. It turns out it was just a short skit to explain how mike check worked.
Now the first girl walked on stage and a D.J. started playing music. She was rapping the song and dancing at the same time. She really got the crowd energetic through the fast and very common song.
I thought this was how most of the performances would go, but there were a wide variety of performances yet to come. There was a lot of poetry read. And all of the poetry read was by that person reading it. I was amazed because I never really imagined people my age reading their own writing to a huge crowd of people. I know I would never. Some other people sang songs most of us were familiar with. Some people had written their own songs and sang those.
Before long it was Jo Jo’s turn. He told me that he had never been so nervous before. That was not a good sign to me. Jo Jo walked on stage and casually sat down on the piano bench. He shouted, “Mike check!” And we responded, “One two!” Jo Jo worked wonders on the piano. Once he found the rhythm he began to sing. Before I knew it everyone was on their feet singing along with him. I was so excited for him.
“Mike Check” was a completely new experience for me. I got to witness people expressing their true emotion through the poems they wrote and the songs that they sang. I felt connected to each of them in a unique way.

Hey, congrats to your friend. That whole thing sounds like something i wouldnt have thought was that cool, but hearing you talk about it makes it sound like something i would actually like. I mean, who doesnt like going out and seeing people perform music or whatever else they choose. It’s amazing how much talent is out there, and makes me wonder if i have musical talent and have just never tried.

This sounds like it was very fun. i would love to go to something like this because i think it is so funny to listen to people sing who have never learned anything even if they are good. i find this to be a good experiance and very fun.

This event sounded really fun! How awesome it must have been to hear your friend perform, especially since you have been friends for so long and never got to experience it! It sounds like he did a great job and had the support of everyone. Maybe he will continue using his musical talents!

As some of the others above me have said, this does sound like an interesting event. It seems it doesn’t matter what you music you like or sing whether it be rap, rock, hip hop, country, classical, etc because this sounds like a place for all to enjoy no matter what your music preferences are. It seems like not matter why type of music was being presented that one would have a good time regardless and I think all events should be like this. Hopefully next time I’m with you, you should take me to one of these so I can feel and see the experience in person

That sounds great, man. it must’ve been really cool to see your friend up on stage with a cheering crowd. it reminds me of this place in Danville Ky. it’s called the Hub and every Thursday night they have an open mic night. people read poetry and play music. places like that have a very comfortable atmosphere.

I’ve never even heard of this before, but it sounds really cool. I love hearing people that can really sing and aren’t just ‘technically’ able to like so many of the performers nowadays. I also enjoy poetry and really think that something like Mike Check would be enjoyable. Also, props to your friend because I would never have the guts to get up in front of a crowd that I dont know and sing for their judgment or applause! SOunds liek you both had a great time!

That sounds pretty sweet. Im glad your friend had the guts to get up on stage and go for it, because I usually chicken out when it comes to stuff like that. I wish I could just get up there and do it like he did. The whole event sounds extremely fun. It sounds kind of like karaoke night or something. But it sounds like a blast.

I’m not exactly a big fan of poetry so I’m not sure whether I would like this or not. But I’m glad you had a good time! And props to your friend for having the courage to go up there and show off his talent.

This sounded like a very fun cultural experience. Since you didn’t know what to expect, it seemed like it contributed to excitment of the performances. I would really enjoy going to an event like this that encorpoates poetry and music together in one.
